Our 3-Level System

Our system is intended to broadly categorize people into three levels of ability that correspond with Brain Food Activity Books. Each level in our proprietary system is defined based on five dimensions of cognitive function, as outlined below.

  • Level I: Evidence of short-term memory loss
  • Level II: Severe short-term memory loss
  • Level III: Severe memory loss

  • Level II: Frequent trouble finding words, possible “word salads”
  • Level III: Limited ability to express self and make needs known

Language Comprehension

  • Level I: Little to no noticeable impact
  • Level II: Able to follow simple written and verbal instructions with frequent prompting
  • Level III: Difficult to know level of comprehension

Personal Safety

  • Level I: Likely safe to be alone for extended periods
  • Level II: Should not be left alone for extended periods, or possibly at all
  • Level III: Most likely should not be left alone

Attention Span

  • Level I: Able to work on a task or project for 10-15 minutes or longer
  • Level II: Limited to 5-10 minutes
  • Level III: Severely limited

Please note this is not medical advice or a map of what everyone’s dementia journey will look like. No person will perfectly match every attribute in a given level and progress through the stages exactly as outlined, and there are many more symptoms people with dementia will likely experience. However, the symptoms that are most relevant to “brain exercise” generally progress as described. Caregivers should identify the level that most closely aligns with their loved one’s abilities to select the right Brain Food Activity Book.
